About Pet Portals
American Animal Hospital Association &
Summer pet health issues
Summer is a fun time of year in Fort Collins for pets and their owners. With warm weather and sporting activities a great part of Colorado life, pet owners need to take certain precautions to ensure their pet's health and safety.

The environment in Colorado is semi-arid and with that in mind, pet owners should always have a fresh source of water available for their pets. It is extremely easy for pets to become dehydrated during our warm weather, especially when being active. Pets do not sweat, and rely on their ability to pant to release body heat, so their water needs rise. When outside, is not recommended that pets drink from our streams or run-off, as giardia, a parasite that will cause gastrointestinal disease, may be present. Therefore, it is very important that fresh water is provided for them by taking a water supply for them when out on hikes or at the park.

Fleas are becoming an increasing concern for us as they are adapting to our climate and pets from flea endemic states are bringing them here. Fleas on the prairie dog population are known to transmit plague to our feline pets. If your cat is an outdoor animal in an area at risk, applying a safe flea repellent is a wise idea. Fleas can be a source of itchy skin disease in dogs and cats and a thorough flea treatment program is often the only option to rid your pet of these pesky creatures.

Summer is the most active time for our pets and unfortunately, that brings an increase in trauma cases to our veterinary hospital. Dog fights, cat bites, encounters with snakes and automobile accidents are some of the more common problems we in the profession see. One of the simplest things pet owners can do to reduce these unfortunate visits is to have our pets under control at all times. The number of accidents that can be avoided simply by putting a leash on our dogs is countless in number and many lives would not have been lost if owners were simply more careful. Dogs, like children, should not travel unrestrained inside a car, and should never be loose in the back of a pickup truck or other vehicle. Always remember to leave the windows in your car open if your pet is left unattended as the temperature can rise to over 100 degrees within four minutes in a closed vehicle. If your cat is one who goes outside, ensuring that they are tucked away in their home at night will avoid much heartache and unnecessary pain.

If we care for our pets responsibly, they will be happy, healthy and with us for a long time.
